Abstract

The ever increasing water demand, mainly due to industrial development and increasing population density in specific areas and, therefore, the amount of wastewater that is discharged. This increase in demand and volume of contaminated water and its impact on the environment, is causing pressure on the levels of pollution is more demanding and quality required to approach the requirements for reuse. Membrane biological reactors represent a breakthrough in traditional systems, incorporating in a single stage operations aeration, secondary sedimentation and filtration. The increase in water demand has promoted the implementation of these systems to scale, especially in cases which raises the possibility of reuse of water. This paper aims to show the advantages and disadvantages of these systems from traditional systems.
