Abstract

This article covers the results obtained during three years, in which the concentration of fats and oils was determined in bathing areas of Santiago de Cuba´s bay: La Socapa, La Estrella, Barrio Técnico, Punta Gorda and El Níspero. The objective was to evaluate the degree of contamination by these chemicals on the beaches of the Bay. The study covered the years 2013, 2014 and 2016. In 2013 pollution in La Socapa, La Estrella and Barrio Técnico was assessed; in 2014 the above were evaluated and Punta Gorda; and in 2016 the contamination of the El Níspero and La Estrella was assessed. In all cases surface water samples in each spa were taken and analyzed by the gravimetric method, resulting that all monitored areas had levels of fats and oils well above the established by the NC 22: 1999, which is It considers that these Bay beaches are not suitable for direct contact. Of the sampling points, La Estrella was the most contaminated spa during the three years.
