Physical-chemical characterization of the organic fraction of urban solid waste from the controlled landfill at the Abel Santamaría Urban Center in Santiago de Cuba
Abstract
The development of a comprehensive management system for municipal solid waste (MSW), the main difficulty in waste generation as the lack of the chemical composition. This paper proposes the characterization of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) to assess their potential. In the characterization were used test methods from the Methods Group by Office of Solid Waste Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the U.S. authorities, and standard for the analysis of water and wastewater methods. The resulting fraction from the characterization favors anaerobic dry and wet treatments, while chemically pretreated methods presents favorable for use in agriculture applications and features. Keywords: organic fraction, municipal solid waste.
