Abstract
The anaerobic digestion technology is widely employed for biological treatment of wastewater containing high concentrations of organic matter with the use of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB). In the present work it is carried out a revision of principal biotic and abiotic factors ofthe major incident in the granulation process of natural inoculum in UASB reactors, for example, development of Methanothrix bacteria in the sludge, the production of extracellular polymers (EPS), upflow velocity, suspended solids contents, and the characteristics of substrate. The evaluation of the previously analyzed factors, allowed the development of a granulation strategy that goes from the selection and characterization of the sources of used inoculum, and the
characterization of the residual water to be tried, until the analysis of the main operational parameters with more repercussion in the outburst, setting in march and operation of this type of anaerobic reactor.
